A Shift in Mindset: Embracing Smarter Repair Strategies in the Asia-Pacific Market

As we head into this year’s MRO Asia-Pacific, the conversation around smarter, more cost-effective maintenance strategies continues to build momentum.

The current climate, marked by ongoing supply chain constraints and rising operational costs, is forcing operators and lessors alike to re-evaluate long-held procurement habits. AJW Group is seeing a significant shift across the region: operators who previously relied exclusively on OEM support and factory-new components are now actively exploring third-party MRO solutions and serviceable material sourcing strategies to improve cost efficiency.

This evolution reflects a broader industry trend: a willingness to reconsider what “value” truly means in the context of component support.

Driving Efficiency Through AI

Underpinning this transformation is technology. AJW has been on a three-year journey to embed artificial intelligence across our global operations. Today, AI powers everything from automated quoting and pricing to the soon-to-be-launched AI-driven sourcing for repair RFPs, streamlining procurement, accelerating decision-making, and freeing up valuable time and resources for our customers.

Our new real-time inventory management platform will monitor everything from individual piece parts to full MRO operations across our business, ensuring we respond faster, more intelligently, and with greater precision across every customer touchpoint.

This level of agility is both operational and strategic. It enables us to offer competitive pricing, enhanced turnaround times, and improved reliability, giving operators a tangible advantage in a highly competitive market.

Regulatory & Contractual Constraints: Time for a Reset?

Despite the progress, challenges remain. One of the most pressing is the lack of harmonisation across global airworthiness authorities. FAA-, EASA- or TCCA-approved repairs are still not automatically accepted by certain authorities, introducing delays and inefficiencies that no longer make sense in a globally connected aviation ecosystem.

Equally, aircraft lease agreements often prohibit the use of alternative repair standards or parts such as DERs and PMA. These restrictions are not technical; they are contractual and driven largely by asset value preservation. For the industry to truly evolve, we need to bring OEMs, lessors, airlines, and MROs together to agree on what is acceptable, safe, and sustainable.

Shifting this mindset will take time. But the benefits - cost savings, improved availability, and stronger supply chain resilience - are worth the effort.

A Regional Opportunity for Global Leadership

Asia-Pacific has a unique opportunity to learn from other regions' experience and leapfrog outdated thinking. With a collaborative approach, backed by intelligent repair strategies and the right technological investment, the region could lead the way in reshaping how the industry thinks about parts and repairs.

AJW is not waiting for the industry to catch up. We’re investing, innovating, and partnering with forward-thinking customers to lead the change now.
